The evolution of humans does not include our illustration skills

So here is an interactive infographic that is part of some MSNBC Evolution feature. It intends to show the evolutionary theory behind humans and also the future of human evolution.

However you feel about this stuff, you can’t deny that this is a little weird to imagine.  Not only that, but this graphic looks like it could use some evolution itself!  I think this concept could have been pushed further to show the information in a fun, intuitive way – informationally, stylistically and navigationally.

There seems to be a big gap between ‘late homo’ and ‘uni-human’… perhaps the artist depiction of how we look today could help bridge that.

I hate to dis’ illustrators, but the style is weak. They likely don’t want it to look too realistic, but instead we got something out of a 1970’s encyclopedia… mixed with poor photo-retouching, pixelated cropping, poor typography and weak navigation… and I hope this isn’t harping too much, but let’s see some imagination! The future is a mix of alien-cavemen, the Terminator and Coneheads? How did they miss Star Wars?

Just sayin’…
